Underwater Lights

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. What bulb is the brightest?
This chart illustrates light output according to bulb type (lumens/watt).

    Light output:
70 watt halogen approx 1500 lumens
85 watt halogen approx 1700 lumens
35 watt xenon HID approx 3600 lumens / 50 watt xenon HID approx 5300 lumens
150 watt metal halide approx 16000 lumens

  2. Why do you use borofloat glass for the lens?
Others claim that their lens is more transparent, but forget about other important factors. Borofloat glass not only offers great clarity but can handle extreme pressure and heat. This lens will not blacken or crack like other types. We have been using this lens now for over 8 years with proven track record and no failures.

  3. Do you sell an LED underwater light?
Yes, we have designed an LED underwater light that is perfect for smaller boats that wish to use LED lighting.

  4. Are the lights approved and independently tested?
Yes, we have Lloyd's Register, UL Recognized Component Mark rating, ABS type approval, CE certification and ignition protection where applicable.

  5. Do the underwater lights need to be installed with special cabling?
Only on our A/C powered underwater lights between the ballast and the light you must use high temperature silicone cabling. You can use normal ships cable from the power supply to the ballast.

  6. Can I turn the light on when the boat is hauled out?
The lights can be tested when out of the water, but we do not recommend for a long period of time.

  7. Can the underwater lights be left on while the boat is running at speed?
Yes, all lights can be left on.

  8. How easy is installation?
Installation is very straight forward, but must be carried out by qualified personnel.

  9. Should the exterior surfaces of the thru hull be anti-fouled?
Yes, the exterior surfaces should be anti-fouled. For glass lens see question 12.

  10. Can the lamp be changed from inside?
Yes, all regular maintenance for the thru hull underwater lights can be carried out from within the hull. The LED range needs to be returned to the factory for service.

  11. How do I protect the glass from marine growth?
Using the lights will help prevent growth. A clear anti-foul is also available to be painted on the glass lens. For further information, please contact your local dealer or underwater lights office. When cleaning, please use a soft brush.

  12. Is the back of the light watertight?
All lights have been extensively tested by independent laboratories and our in house testing facility to ensure the back of the light is watertight when properly installed.

  13. What is the light beam length?
The light beam length depends on the model used and the water clarity, ranging from 10-100 feet.

  14. How often do I need to change the lamp?
For halogen and HID every 500 to 6000 hours. For LED’s approx. every 10,000 hours (see product information sheets for specific models)

  15. Do the lights have to be installed below the waterline?
Yes, we recommend the lights to be installed below the waterline. See technical specifications for more information.

  16. What is the Underwater Lights® USA warranty policy?
